UFC Releases 7-1 Heavyweight on Win Streak
The
Ultimate Fighting Championship is hastily making room for a
slew of new acquisitions in a couple weeks.
On Thursday, MMA Fighting first reported the news that the promotion had decided not to re-sign Martin Buday (16-2). The Slovakian fighter confirmed he was departing the UFC for the time being shortly after the story broke. Buday was not cut by the UFC, and his contract had concluded and was not renewed.
Buday leaves the confines of the Octagon on a three-fight win streak. The Oktagon MMA veteran made his way to the UFC thanks to a victory on the 2021 season of Dana White’s Contender Series. While he rattled off four wins in his first four UFC outings, only one came by stoppage, a kimura of Josh Parisian.
In his most high-profile encounter at the time, Buday threw down with Shamil Gaziev in late 2023, and had his jaw jacked for the first time in his career. A trio of decisions over Andrei Arlovski, Uran Satybaldiev and Marcus Almeida—the latter at UFC on ABC 9 mere days ago—led Buday to this point after eight appearances. By claiming six wins on the scorecards over the last few years, Buday had already placed himself in a tie for the third-most decisions in UFC heavyweight history.
The UFC opted not to re-sign the big man despite other heavyweights on the roster sporting company records like 1-6, 1-4 with a no contest, 2-3 and 4-5 with a no contest. In comparison, current heavyweight champ Tom Aspinall has won eight times while losing once in the UFC. The 33-year-old, who recently rose to the No. 12 spot on the UFC’s heavyweight ranks, leaves the organization with his chin held high, as he released a statement on social media saying so.
“Yeah it’s true,” Buday wrote. “Yesterday we got a call that UFC is not resigning us for the moment…well it is what it is at least I’m leaving with my head up. Thank you.”
